In the late 19th century, the port underwent significant development under British colonial rule. A 335-meter iron-screw pile pier was constructed in 1861, and despite challenges from storms, the port began handling ships inside the harbor from 1881. The harbor’s construction was completed in 1911, marking a significant milestone in its development.
